Pulses are healthy and delicious foods! The Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, is an excellent opportunity to educate and inspire Registered Dietitians to promote pulses as part of their nutrition education and counseling!
For International Year of Pulses the American Pulse Association, USA Dry Pea and Lentil Council, Canadian Lentils, Pulse Canada, and the Northern Pulse Growers Association are all working together in focusing attention on these amazing foods!

Pulse Appeal – How (and Why) to Eat More of the Superfoods Most Americans Haven’t Heard Of
Description: As one of the highest sources of plant protein, pulses have been the humble backbone of healthy cuisines around the world for centuries. Learn the latest research on how adding beans, peas, chickpeas, and lentils can be just as effective (if not more so) than calorie restriction for improving certain health outcomes, and how easy (and affordable) it is to incorporate pulses into one’s diet.
Session Outline:
Introduction by Moderator: Kelly Toups, MLA, RD, LDN, registered dietitian at Oldways will provide context about the role pulses play in traditional diets around the world, and will introduce the panelists. (5 minutes)
Speaker 1: John L Sievenpiper, MD, PhD, FRCPC will give a brief nutritional overview of pulses, following by a presentation of the latest research on pulses’ role in disease prevention and treatment (including weight management, satiety, cardiovascular disease, gut health, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes). Dr. Sievenpiper has authored multiple studies on pulses and their role in health, and will also share some of his upcoming research. (35 minutes)
Speaker 2: Cynthia Sass, MPH, RD and author of Slim Down NOW, will speak to how to incorporate these superfoods into the Western Diet, emphasizing new, innovative uses of pulse crops and pulse ingredients. She will offer tactics for how to include pulses into nutrition therapy for a variety of clients/patients with varying health challenges, and will share the strong economic benefit of low price per serving of protein. She will also address the appropriateness of pulses in specialty diets such as gluten-free. (35 minutes)

Speaker Biographies:
John L Sievenpiper, MD, PhD, FRCPC
Dr. Sievenpiper is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, where he holds the PSI Foundation Graham Farquharson Knowledge Translation Fellowship.
He is also a Consultant Physician in the Division of Endocrinology & Metabolism; Scientist in the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, and Knowledge Synthesis Lead in the Toronto 3D Knowledge Synthesis & Clinical Trials Unit at St. Michael’s Hospital. His current research interests focus on using meta-analytical techniques and randomized controlled trials to investigate diet and disease relationships.
He has been appointed to the Expert Committees of the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) 2013 Clinical Practice Guidelines for Nutrition Therapy, the European Association for the study of Diabetes (EASD) 2015 Clinical Practice Guidelines for Nutrition Therapy, the 2015 Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS) Dyslipidemia Guidelines Update, as well as the American Society for Nutrition (ASN) for a scientific statement on sugars. Dr. Sievenpiper has authored over 100 scientific papers, 12 book chapters, 118 abstracts, and 26 successful grant applications.
His work has been cited more than 1700 times for an h-index of 25.
Cynthia Sass, MPH, RD
Cynthia is a registered dietitian (RD), and is Board Certified as a Specialist in Sports Dietetics (C.S.S.D.) by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. She also completed a personal training certification at the well-known Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research in Dallas, Texas, and formal culinary training at the Institute for Culinary Awakening in Portland, Oregon.
Cynthia Sass is a nationally-recognized nutrition and health expert based in New York City and Los Angeles. She's one of the few registered dietitians who has consistently worked in nearly every aspect of nutrition communications – as an on-staff magazine editor, writer, columnist, blogger, New York Times best-selling author, speaker, spokesperson, contributor to a national news network, regular national TV guest, and practitioner.
