MOSCOW, Idaho – February 20, 2026 Today, USA Pulses, the leading voice for farmers and processors of American-grown pulses, including dry beans, lentils, chickpeas, and dry peas, issued the following statement in response to U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins’ announcement that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will purchase up to $263 million in agricultural commodities to support American producers and nutrition assistance programs.

Under the announcement, USDA intends to purchase up to $75 million in pulse crops, including:

  • $25 million in dried beans (black and pinto)
  • $12 million in chickpeas
  • $14 million in lentils
  • $24 million in split peas

Tim McGreevy, chief executive officer of USA Pulses, said:“Secretary Rollins’ announcement provides meaningful support for American pulse producers while helping deliver nutritious, affordable food to families across the country.  This $75 million investment in dry beans, lentils, chickpeas, and dry peas recognizes the essential role pulses play in both uplifting rural and agricultural communities and promoting food security.

“These purchases will help stabilize farm income, strengthen rural economies, and ensure food banks and nutrition assistance programs have access to shelf-stable, protein-rich foods that stretch tight household budgets further. Pulses are among the most affordable and nutrient-dense foods available and expanding their reach benefits both producers and American families.”

Paul Kanning, Chairman of USA Pulses and pulse farmer in Montana, said: “From the farmers who grow pulse crops, to the rural processors that package and distribute our products, to the families who rely on nutrition assistance programs, this investment supports the full commodity supply chain. Strengthening demand for American-grown pulses uplifts rural communities and helps put wholesome, real food on American tables.”
