Pulses crop health initiative (PCHI)

The Pulse Crop Health Initiative (PCHI) is a federally funded research program dedicated to advancing scientific understanding of the nutritional value, health benefits, and utilization of U.S. pulses (dry peas, lentils, chickpeas, and dry beans). Through research conducted by leading universities and scientific institutions, PCHI examines the role of pulses in promoting human health, preventing chronic diseases, and improving overall nutrition. The initiative also supports food innovation by exploring new uses for pulses in food products and ingredients. Research findings provide valuable, science-based information to the food industry, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and consumers. By expanding knowledge of the health benefits and applications of pulses, PCHI helps create new market opportunities, increase domestic consumption, and strengthen demand for U.S.-grown pulse crops.

Download the Pulse Quality Survey

The annual Pulse Quality Survey summarizes the quality of commercially grown U.S. dry peas, lentils, and chickpeas. Samples are collected from major producing states, including Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Idaho, and Washington. Dr. Clifford Hall and his team at South Dakota State University conduct the testing, evaluation, and publication. The program provides industry, academic, and government professionals with accessible, science-based data to support the use of pulses as whole foods and food ingredients.

Legume Virus Project – “Aphid Tracker”

This project was established in 2007 to provide decision support and seasonal monitoring of pea aphids and viruses in the Palouse region of North Idaho and Eastern Washington. In this project, aphids are monitored with a network of field-side pan traps and the data are provided on a weekly basis on the project website. Aphids are tested for viruses and those results are also posted. Dr. Sanford Eigenbrode and his team at University of Idaho and collaborators have been conducting the project.
