north Dakota Dry Pea and Lentil Council
The North Dakota Dry Pea and Lentil Council was created by the North Dakota Legislature in 1997 to support the state’s growing dry pea, lentil and chickpea industry. Established through grower-supported legislation, the Council created a unified voice for producers and a way to invest grower checkoff dollars in research, market development, education and promotion. Today, the Council represents North Dakota growers of dry peas, lentils, chickpeas, fava beans and lupins and continues to be guided by producers who understand the opportunities and challenges facing North Dakota farms.
North Dakota has grown into one of the nation’s leading pulse-producing states. Its growers are an important part of the U.S. supply of dry peas, lentils and chickpeas for domestic and international markets. Pulses also play an important role on North Dakota farms, providing additional cropping opportunities and contributing to a diverse and resilient agricultural economy.
The Council works to turn grower checkoff dollars into opportunities for North Dakota producers. Investments support production research, expand markets for North Dakota-grown pulses, provide education and industry information, and address issues that directly affect growers. The Council also works to ensure North Dakota producers are represented in discussions about government programs, crop insurance, research priorities and other issues important to the future of pulse production.
Pantnership with USA Pulses
Through its partnership with USA Pulses, the Council extends the reach and impact of North Dakota grower investments. Working together provides North Dakota growers with a stronger presence in domestic and international market development, national research initiatives, and government affairs. These partnerships help build demand, address production challenges, protect grower interests, and create new opportunities for North Dakota pulse producers.
